Dover to Calais ferry or tunnel: 6 hours driving, including stops, on the French side. Fast roads. Motorway tolls. Goes via Paris ‘periphique' so pick your time!
Portsmouth to Caen : (Brittany Ferries or P&O): Normal crossing 6 hours. In the summer P&O ran a ‘fastcraft' which takes 3.5 hours and is great. 4.5 hours driving in France excluding stops. This is via Argentan and Le Mans and includes some deserted motorways and generally quiet ‘normal' roads. Tolls: 5.80 euros + 80 cents to get off at Tours . [They are in the process of building a new motorway which should make a huge difference].
Portsmouth to Le Havre (P&O): Normal crossing 6.5 hours. Driving in France = 4 ¾ hours and needs to go quite close to Caen so is almost the same route.
Poole to Cherbourg (Brittany Ferries): crossing 4.5 hours (unless you do it overnight). Driving in France is via Caen and is 1.5 hours longer. |
